The series I’m currently working on films in a location that is directly under a flight path which is obviously very annoying and creates a lovely rumbling background noise the whole way through scenes. Can anyone recommend any capable 3rd party AVX plugins that might do a better job? I’ve heard good things about isotope RX and a product called Brusfri. Will be downloading the trials on Monday but wondering if anyone has any personal recommendations for powerful noise reduction – although the budget doesn’t stretch to something like Cedar unfortunately The noise reudction plugin is simple and they have one of the best reverb removers I’ve used.

Thanks, they have a free trial so I’ll give that a shot and compare. Isotope works well but the interface is a bit of a convoluted mess and not very intuitive. Both izotope and ERA noise reduction plugins were giving away for free as a avid loyality promtion.

Thats how I got mine from izotope and ERA. Check your prodcuts in your account and see if they are still doing the offer. That is part of the ERA4 standard bundle. The izotope plugins look like they are probably super powerful but honestly the interface was way too complicated for what I need to do. That’s just what I need.

Buying a full Protools license for these limited features is very poor value for money. Philip Kapadia: Avid has a longtime partnership with Boris. Boris has partnerships with everyone. It’s ridiculous to claim that if Avid improved their product that we’d all stop buying Boris and that that is why Avid isn’t adding better features. Even if that were the case, who cares? Boris’ bottom line has nothing to do with Avid.

Avid isn’t a charity set up to drive customers to Boris although it does seem to be working like that currently. Philip Kapadia: I don’t believe there’s a technical limitation. So you’re saying that Avid can add all these features but is purposefully not doing it in order to force picture editors to buy Protools and Boris plugins? Absolute nonsense. It’s a resource issue pure and simple. I’m not under any illusions, we can’t expect the pace of BM or Adobe, but these are longstanding feature requests that have been asked for for years and years.

It is frustrating to see so little progress being made on them. I use the ERA noise reduction plugins and they are sufficient and cheap. This whole discussion though is about Avid upping the level of their base offering. I can turn Avid in to a very capable NLE by spending thousands of pounds extra on plugins but I don’t think it’s too much to ask to get some more focussed improvements in the core functionality that I pay for every year.

Hi all. Let me jump in here, to hopefully be the chill pill that cools everyone’s jets. There’s no conspiracy happening. There’s no sales ploy to get people onto or off of Pro Tools for this-or-that reason. We at Avid have many long-time feature requests, including many in developing Media Composer’s audio capabilities. A lot of them – like the audio pop issue someone mentioned above – are indeed in the queue to be triaged and hopefully fixed.

We are also constantly looking at feature requests in the form of what customers are asking for; how many customers are asking for each one; and for what workflow. Like Hollywood editors versus broadcast versus YouTubers, and so on. So let’s change this thread into one that we at Avid can actually find productive.

Let’s instead start listing exactly what feature requests everyone here would like to see. The Audio EQ Tool performs real-time, segment-based equalization on individual clips. It has a simple interface with low, mid, and high frequency band controls that can be used to adjust the sonic characteristics of an audio clip. Even the most beautiful plug-in interface cannot help the fact the audio equalization can seem extremely technical and counterintuitive.

Fortunately, the real strength of the Audio EQ Tools lies in its preset library. This type of setting can take a lot of work to create from scratch! The Audio EQ Tool is great for recalling presets, but its interface design is focused on simplicity rather than power.

The 7-band EQIII has a beautiful interface that presents information in two different formats—the traditional knob-based interface with controls for frequency, gain and Q settings, and a large graph in the upper right corner with color-coded points that visually indicate the position of each EQ band.

The basic technique is simple. First, set a high Q setting so that the frequency band becomes very narrow. This will make any sonic element that falls within the band quite loud and easy to distinguish from the rest of the clip. Finally, sweep the frequency of the band up and down using the FREQ control. You should be able to home in on the offending squeal. Then, gradually reduce the Q setting until the entire noise disappears. The trick is to widen the band just enough to remove the squeal without impacting the rest of the clip any more than necessary.

Some times a noise is masking such a huge frequency range that it cannot be eliminated using a standard EQ. There are many excellent plug-ins on the market that do a good job of reducing some types of broadband noise. However, it should be noted that broadband noise can generally only be reduced and not eliminated. The more stable the broadband noise the better it can be reduced.
