Not the fastest computer but easy to live with and yes it does have windows 11 pro for the operating system. After experiencing problems with another vendors product multi-NIC and designed for firewall use and after returning two units, I decided to give this mini a try as a pfsense firewall.
Total overkill for this small firewall application but since it supports AES-NI and is also Win11 compatible so it’s a future proof solution. No problems with Win11 when I was doing initial testing on the bench. Satisfied it works reliably, I removed Win11 and installed the latest version of pfsense ver 2. No problems with that either. I was hoping that I could use the built-in WiFi as a separate firewall segment for some sensor data but the embedded not replaceable WiFi chip does not support AP mode.
Installed an external AP router instead. Technical support was very responsive use the Amazon links for fast responses and provided accurate information. Reliability is the only concern right now. I’ve had the firewall running for a week now at a clients remote location and it’s working as expected – error free. First, good cyber Monday deal. Fired up with no problems, I was impressed. You can add an internal SSD for additional storage.
It is There is a fragile very thin ribbon connector that connects from the SSD mount on the bottom of the case to the main board. I opened correctly but there isn’t much slack in the ribbon and it easily popped out of the connection on the SSD mount.
The end of the ribbon just has some tiny gold contacts, not a sturdy plug. After I easily inserted the SSD I now had to try to get that ribbon inserted back in to the connection. This wasn’t easy! The ribbon is fragile so it won’t take much distress and some force is required to get it back in and then hope you got it inserted correctly and all the contacts properly aligned!
Wait a second- I kinda think that ribbon wasn’t inserted correctly in the first place and that is why it slipped out so easily. Reviews Amethyst. This is my opinion as a student, and the only reason i’m writing this review is because I got an email prompting me and I felt like writing a review for this neat little laptop.
I bought this laptop as a general note taking laptop for lectures, and as a general light-use laptop. It is also very, very light. Which could be seen as positive or a negative, depending on the user. One of my friends commented that it feels like nothing is on your lap while you are using it, which is very true. I personally like the lightweight of it. The laptop is made of some quite cheap-feeling and tacky silver plastic, but none of the plastic has broken yet, and with a laptop this cheap I hardly expected quality materials.
The plastic does its job and from a distance it looks quite nice, a few people even asked if I had gotten a MacBook, clearly they hadn’t inspected the laptop that much as there is a great big “HTC” label below the screen. The cheap quality of the plastic also contributes the lightness of the laptop I guess. The Keyboard is okay.
It’s full size with spaces between the keys. I wouldn’t call it an amazing typing experience, but then it’s not awful either. It doesn’t have the classic “tap tap” noise of normal laptop keyboards, more of a spongey sort of button noise. However I have had far worse typing experiences than this one, from laptops that cost a great deal more. How well the keyboard lasts however is a different matter.
I’ve only had the laptop a few weeks so I will have to come back and edit this review in a few months to update. The Screen is very nice for this price. A full P Panel, not overly bright but is very sharp. The screen has a matte finish, not a glossy one.
It’s very matte, almost looks like a kindle screen. It’s very high detail though, and has good viewing angles. Battery is good, lasts a good few hours from full charge. Temperature-wise the laptop gets very hot while charging and under heavy load, the laptop doesn’t have any fans so there is not much that can be done to cool it. The lack of fans does make the laptop silent however, which is nice as my old Dell laptop used to make a massive noise from the fan when it got hot.
Performance is nice, quad core does multi-tasking well. Struggles a bit with games, but that is to be expected with the P scree, and to be honest I bought this laptop to write lecture notes, but I’ll probably end up playing stardew valley on it anyway.
Overall a very nice laptop for the price, definitely a solid buy for a student wanting to write lecture notes, or a parent wanting to buy their child a laptop to browse the web and do homework on etc. Li Na. Great value for money, highly recommend for light tasks daily use. It has a great quality of screen for both work and entertainment – IPS Full HD x high resolution , which is the best display in this range of price.
